Amazon - Carajas National Forest
Carajas National Forest is situated on the Eastern side of the Amazon Forest, in the Southern area of Para State, Brazil. It is an enormous and continuos Amazon Forest area including several plateaus or serras covered with dense forest. Carajas has a fantastic fauna and flora. A 5 days trip exploring the area can provide a great bird and mammal list with several endemics and rarities. The photographic opportunities are great, apart from the fauna and flora the landscapes are amazing.
Carajas National Forest has more than 550 bird species on its list and that includes a fantastic collection of specialties, rarities and endemics such as Gray Tinamou,White-crested Guan, Dark-winged Trumpeter, Marbled Wood-Quail, Russet-crowned Crake, Gray Hawk, Red-throated Caracara, Cryptic Forest-Falcon, Chestnut-fronted Macaw, Hellmayrs Parakeet, Long-tailed Hermit, Great Jacamar, Pied Puffbird, Rufous-necked Puffbird, Goulds Toucanet, Bar-breasted Piculet, White-throated Woodpecker, Brigidas Woodcreeper, Peruvian Recurvebill, Para Foliage-Gleaner, Ruddy Spinetail, Fasciated Antshrike, Natterers Slaty-Antshrike, White-eyed Antwren, Ornate Antwren, Long-winged Antwren, Rufous-faced Antbird, Banded Antbird, Wing-banded Antbird, Black-spotted Bare-Eye, Chestnut-belted Gnateater, Black-bellied Gnateater, Amazonian Antpitta, Black-faced Antthrush, Helmeted Pygmy-Tyrant, Zimmers Tody-Tyrant, Black-andwhite Tody-Tyrant, Slate-headed Tody-Flycatcher, Black-chested Tyrant, Cinnamon Attila, Purple-breasted Cotinga, White-tailed Cotinga, White Bellbird, White-browed Purpletuft, Wing-barred Piprites, Opal-crowned Manakin, Band-tailed Manakin, Pink-throated Becard, White-naped Jay, Coraya Wren, Para Gnatcatcher, Black-faced Tanager, Red-billed Pied-Tanager, Magpie Tanager, Spotted Tanager, Rose-breasted Chat, Green Oropendola and many, many others.
The Mammals possibilities are also excellent. The more frequently seen mammals at Carajas during our trips are Common Squirrel Monkey, Black-handed Tamarin, Dusky Titi-Monkey, Black-bearded Saki-Monkey, Red-handed Howler-Moneky, Brazilian Tapir and time to time there are a few Jaguar sightings in the area.
