Northern Pantanal - Transpantaneira Road

 Detailed Itinerary

Day 1 - São Paulo/Cuiabá – Pantanal Mato Grosso Hotel (Pixaim River)

Arrival at Cuiabá Airport and transfer to Transpantaneira road. Check-in at Hotel.


Day 2 - Pantanal Mato Grosso Hotel (Pixaim River)
After an early breakfast we will go for a boat ride in Pixaim River. The main target will be the Giant Otter. We will also look for an enormous variety of birds such as Boat-billed Heron, Capped Heron, Blue-throated Piping-Guan, Bare-faced Curassow, Sungrebe, Osprey, Black-collared Hawk, Toco Toucan, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Blue-fronted Parrot, Amazon, Green and Ringed kingfishers, Rufous-tailed Jacamar, Silver-beaked Tanager, Donacobius, Troupial and many others.

Night drive looking for mammals and nocturnal birds.

 

Day 3 - Pantanal Mato Grosso Hotel / Porto Jofre

Morning: birding in the hotel surroundings. We will look for Blue-crowned Trogon, Blue-crowned Motmot, Golden-green Woodpecker, Buff-bellied Hermit, Plain-crowned Spinetail, Great Antshrike, Mato Grosso Antbird, Band-tailed Antbird, Large-billed Antwren, Pearly-vented Tody-Tyrant, Helmeted Manakin, Gray-headed Tanager, Masked Gnatcatcher among other species.

After lunch we drive all the way south to Porto Jofre area, in the end of Transpantaneira Road. Along the way, besides the fantastic landscapes, we will have great chances to see Marsh Deer and luckily Yellow Anaconda. Among birds great chances of seeing Hyacinth Macaw, Golden-collared Macaw, Jabiru and Maguari Stork, Southern Screamer, Great Horned Owl, Great Potoo, Striped Cuckoo, Pygmy Kingfisher, Gray-crested Cacholote, Chotoy Spinetail, Rusty-backed Antwren, Scarlet-headed Blackbird and others.

Day 4 & 5 - Porto Jofre

Full day (8 hours) boat tour in Cuiabá River. We will first concentrate on Jaguars. This is one of the best areas of the county to see them. This area is also very good to see Black Howler Monkey, Brown Capuchin Monkey, Brazilian Tapir and lots of birds such as Large-billed Tern, Black Skimmer, Collared Plover, Pied Lapwing, Plumbeous Ibis, Roseate Spoonbill, King Vulture, Laughing Falcon, Band-tailed Nighthawk, Hyacinth Macaw, Yellow-rumped Cacique and many other Pantanal specialties.

 

Day 6 - Porto Jofre / Araras Eco Lodge

After breakfast, we head for Araras Eco Lodge. Along the way we will make several stops looking for birds, mammals and good pictures opportunities.

Check-in at Araras Eco Lodge.

After our welcome lunch we will go for a walk and visit the Observation Tower (25 meters) from where we have fantastic views of Pantanal. It is a great area for photography. Besides many birds, we will look for Capuchin Monkey, Black Howler Monkey and the rare Pantanal Marmoset.

 

Day 7 - Araras Eco Lodge

Full day birding and exploring the Lodge area. Greater Rhea, Undulated Tinamou, Chestnut-bellied Guan, Sunbittern, Ferruginous Pygmy-Owl, Hyacinth Macaw, Blue-crowned Parakeet, Pygmy Kingfisher, Chestnut-eared Aracari, Blue-tufted Starthroat, Black-throated Mango, White-wedged Piculet, Pale-crested Woodpecker, Straight-billed Woodcreeper, Red-billed Scythebill, Dull-capped Atilla, Hooded Tanager, Red-crested Finch, Rusty-collared Seedeater are some of the bird possibilities in the area.

We will also look for Pantanal Marmoset, Brown Capuchin, Black Howler Monkey, Marsh Deer, Brazilian Tapir, Ocelot, Giant Anteater, Southern Tamandua and Crab-eating Fox.

Night drive looking for mammals and nocturnal birds.

 

Day 8 – Araras Eco Lodge / Cuiabá / Final destination

Free morning to explore the hotel area. After an early lunch, we drive to Cuiabá for connecting flights to final destinations.
